Does the world need another Final Destination movie? No but we’re getting one anyway!
I’m a huge, mega-tron fan of the Final Destination series (meh, the 4th one had it’s moments.)
Mainly, I have a passionate love for seeing splatter on screen especially when it comes from an over-the-top death. Ah, love it!
I love the first Final Destination because Death played such a great role as a presence that stalked the survivors of the plane crash. The movie showed that some things aren’t just happenstance and that when it’s your time to go, you can run and hide but look out! A car is going to drive into you or..or or…that person across the street is going open their closet door and their gun is going to fly out and and and it’s going to go off and shoot you in the face! TWICE!
Hey, it could happen! (especially in a FD movie)
It also played on the “off” feelings we all have sometimes. When we second guess ourselves or just have a “feeling” about something and don’t know why, it may all be a premonition to something bad and shouldn’t be something we shrug off. Getting on a bus that you almost missed, eating that day old sushi or even giving that guy a second date are all things could lead to our deaths! Dun dun dunnn.
The second one was just a “let’s be silly and kill people off in crazy ways!” movie.
The start of the crash was completely intense then came the “how’s he gonna die!? How is she gonna die!? Omg, when is she gonna die!?” game throughout the movie.
The third one was, in my humble opinion, a PERFECT full circle ending to the series. It was thrilling, gruesome *heart* and death was unavoidable which is the point of the whole thing. Beautiful.
And at the time of all this 3-D hype, there had to be yet another one, THE Final Destination and it had to be in 3-D.
Yes, having gore all up in my face is awesome but, the movie was made strictly for 3-D and does not stand on it’s own beyond body parts everywhere and shit flying at the screen. There is minor homage-y moments in the movie but still, it was fun yet weak and unnecessary.
And now my rambling comes to a point, here we are again, another Final Destination movie. Final Destination 5 (which should be changed to “Final-ish Destination”) takes it’s deathly mark on a bridge. The bridge collapses killing a bunch of people, yet some dude has a vision about it, saves some people before it happens, poof it happens, then poof death happens. Poof.
Oh yeah…it’s in 3-D as well.
I’m always going to be all for cool kills and splatter! but is the FD series going to be the next Saw of unnecessary sequels? I mean, yeah it’s totally awesome to have fancy contraptions ripping people apart and stuff but where’s the heart? No I don’t mean literally, I know it’s on the floor somewhere but when movies become all about the kills and there’s no real heart put in the story, what’s the point?
I do welcome the return of Tony Todd to the series but still….we’ll see how this turns out come Aug 12th when FD5 is due to hit theaters.
