On this day instead of watching a movie, I decided to cozy up on my couch and watch The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror special.
This year’s seasonal special had a lot of hype before it aired due to Guillermo del Toro’s involvement.
Del Toro delivered the absolute best intro for the show’s opening featuring nods to his films and other classic horror films.
It was a delight to see random references like The Birds, The Shinning, Hellboy, The Devil’s Backbone, Godzilla, Blade, Pan’s Labyrinth, Phantom of Paradise and so much more.
The first segment of the three story series was called “Oh, The Places You’ll Doh!”
Homer takes the children out on Halloween to cause all kinds of mayhem and mischief. The rhyming Dr. Seuss parody offered a mild intro into the rest of the stories.
The middle installment was about Bart being decapitated and having to share Lisa’s body. It was in the realm of The Thing with Two Heads. The story felt a little rushed which I felt made it the weakest of the three.
The final story, my personal favorite, was called Freaks No Geeks. It was a parody of Tod Browning’s Freaks. Freaks is one of my all-time favorite films in the world so this segment was easy for me to love.
It’s hard to say if The Simpsons still have a hold over an audience after all these years but I can say that this year’s Halloween special has been the best over the last couple of years.
Let’s see how long they can keep this going!
