31 Days of Halloween- Day 29: Clownhouse

Clownhouse was those movies that related a lot to my childhood. No, I wasn’t scared of clowns though they do make me shudder but like the boys in the movie, I was very close to my 2 brothers.

My parents went out of town a lot during the weekends and we left home alone every now and then. My brothers and I would watch horror movies, pretend to be zombies, you know, kids stuff. My older brother was kind of a dick so he was much like Randy (played by Sam Rockwell) and my little brother was a lot like the youngest, Casey, he was scared of everything! The middle child Jefferey, isn’t much like me since he didn’t like Casey being tormented. I, on the other hand, thought it was funny.

In Clownhouse, three kid brothers who are home alone are hunted by three escaped mental patients dressed like clowns.

Casey has a fear of clowns so of course he not only had to stay alive and help his brothers but he also has to confront his fear. That’s one thing that kind of bothered me about this movie. This may be considered a spoiler so scroll down to the next paragraph…. now………. In the end Casey doesn’t face his fear head on and own it. He runs and hides and another brother takes out the final clown. That was something that always stuck with me. I’ve always seen movies where the end leads to when the main character is forced to conquer the villain just to survive. The clown would have killed Casey and he would have died by his fear. Tsk, tsk.

The very end of the movie shows a great, meaningful quote: “No man can hide from his fears; as they are a part of him, they will always know where he is hiding.”

That fits so well with this yet, once you no longer fear something, it won’t be a part of you so I’m all about conquering your fears! Rawr!

I didn’t know this until years after I grew up but this movie does carry a horror story of it’s own. Director Victor Salva had oral sex with under-aged Nathan Winters (Casey.) The news was quite shocking to me at the time and I didn’t know how to feel about Salva especially since I love this movie. It made me feel kind of dirty. But it’s been 20 years and Salva has given us Jeepers Creepers and Fear Itself. I got to met Salva two years ago while he was promoting Fear Itself. Though I did have both Jeepers Creepers on dvd, I wanted nothing more but to have him sign my Clownhouse dvd. It was a bit uncomfortable for me when I told him I loved it as a kid and he responded with “I felt like a kid when I made this.” *awkward silence* But I’m was afraid he wouldn’t sign it and he did so I was happy.

But anyway, Clownhouse, great movie and I hope Sam Rockwell mentions it when he does his acceptance speech for Moon at the Oscars!
