I’m a full-on geek when it comes to all things horror. When I see a kick ass trailer, I get a hard-on, when I see a great movie, I want to tell everyone about it and when I see some insane, gory scene in a movie, I can’t help but mumble or yell “SWEET!!!!” But the one thing that brings out my geekdom more than anything is horror conventions. This weekend I attended Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors in L.A.
Yes, I’m such a geek that I traveled to go to a convention but hey, the guest list ruled!
The convention started on Friday and the first panel to kick things off was for the movie Walking Distance with With writer/director Mel House and cast members Adrienne King, Reggie Bannister, Shannon Lark and Denton Blane Everett.
The trailer for the movie wasn’t working so it was hard understand what the movie was about because they couldn’t get into a lot of details. They did have the trailer running at their table in the vendor’s room but I didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Oops. It seems like another zombie-esque/viral movie so I may check it out in the future.
Next up with Pig Hunt from the director of Jason X (I know, I know) and the cast.
The movie looks like it’s stupid fun. Jason X was stupid fun and there is nothing wrong with that. Revenge story aside, I want to see a 3000 pound pig kill people.
Next: S. Darko. with director Chris Fisher and actress Briana Evigan. Honestly, the more I see the trailer, the more I really don’t have much faith in this movie. I really want to give it a try but, again trailer-based, it looks so WB or is it CW now? Whatever the channel is that plays the teen shows. I kinda felt bad for director and actress. They went into the panel knowing that this movie is going to be hated and they were ok with that. They knew they were following up on a great, popular film and some sequels can’t measure up but they still stand behind it and want people to give it a chance. I give them a lot of credit so for that I have to check it out.
And now on to the greatest Sam Raimi! and Drag Me to Hell stars Justin Long (yep the Mac guy) and Lorna Raver. I talked about this movie before and how I couldn’t help compare it to Stephen King’s Thinner but still I’m going to see this movie. We got to watch a scene from the movie which was so gross that I loved it! Of course the question of the hour was about any future installment on Evil Dead. He said that it was possible but I remain cynical.
I also loved that someone in the Q&A said that Sam was ours first and now we have to share him with the world.
Sam was unable to do autographs after the panel but yet he was nice enough to sign about 100Drag Me to Hell posters. We lined up by rows, and ya’ll…. would you believe that I…me… got the very last Sam Raimi signed poster!!!!!! I completely bricked in my pants and I teared up a little! It was one of the greatest moments of my life!!!!
I really don’t care if I end up liking this movie or not, I’m going to cherish the shit out this poster.
After that wonderful moment, the Grace panel was up featuring the actress Jordan Ladd, director Paul Solet and producer Adam Green, one of my favorite people. This was the first movie I ever wrote about on here and the Q and A and clip that was shown made me want to see this movie even more. I feel that this could actually be one of my favorite movies of the year. On one end, yeah I think it’s kinda cool that this baby came back to life and needs blood to live but to me I find it more appealing that Jordan Ladd’s character wanted this baby more than anything and even though the baby was meant to die, she willed it to live. I love the concept that she loves this baby so much that she’s willing to do anything and it’s the love that makes this so powerful. It’s that intense kind of love that makes you do anything and everything, and in it’s own way, that can be a really scary thing.
The dvd should be released some time in September so I will really be looking forward to that.
Poster and Swag:
After that panel was done I strolled around vendor’s room and came across this awesome table.
I swear, if I had any money to spare, I would have paid to have this guy tattoo me!
This isn’t Fango related but if you’re really into the horror scene, then I’m sure you heard about a little movie called Black Devil Doll. Friday night was the L.A. premiere and fuck was it a lot of fun. Before the movie started, my dear friend Uncle Creepy from Dread Central got things started off by throwing black dildos and butt plugs into the audience which resulted in two people leaving the theater before the movie even started. If that offended them then it was probably a good idea they didn’t stay for the whole thing. I myself was honored to have a black butt plug hit me in the face.
The movie was everything I was expecting it to be, a funny movie about a racist, rapist, murdering doll. It had it’s good moment but then it had some drawn out unnecessary moments. Overall it was a fun movie and I think the audience experience and flying dildos helped.
And I did not bring my camera to the event so this is the only picture I have to offer.
(I will get to working on Saturday’s blog as soon as I can)
